Questions answered
What surface suits a stone villa best?
Natural setts, golden or buff gravel with a sett edge, or a resin blend in stone colours usually sit best. We'll suggest options after seeing the house.
Can you widen our entrance through the stone wall?
Often, but in a conservation area removing part of a wall can need permission. Where it goes ahead, we rebuild the piers and wall ends neatly, reusing stone where possible.
There's a big tree near the drive. Is that a problem?
Not necessarily. Protected trees and roots need care, and we may suggest a no-dig construction near the tree. Check whether the tree is protected before any work.
Will a resin drive survive Harrogate winters?
Yes, when it's laid on a sound, free-draining base. Frost damage usually comes from water trapped beneath a surface.
Do I need permission for a gravel drive?
Generally not, because gravel is permeable. Conservation areas and listed buildings can bring other controls.
Who handles dropped kerbs now?
North Yorkshire Council, which replaced Harrogate Borough Council in April 2023. See vehicle crossings.
How long does a driveway take?
It varies with size, surface and weather. Resin and tarmac need dry spells, and setts take longer to lay than blocks.
Do you cover Knaresborough?
Yes, along with villages such as Follifoot, Pannal, Killinghall and Hampsthwaite. See areas.
