Driveways for Harrogate winters

Reviewed

Harrogate sits on high ground by Yorkshire standards, and its winters bring hard frosts, snow on the higher roads and long wet spells. Here's how that affects a drive, and what helps it last.

Why winter is hard on drives

Most drive failures in Harrogate start underground. Water gets into the base or the clay beneath, freezes, expands and lifts the surface. When it thaws, the ground softens and settles unevenly. Repeat that through a winter and a thin or badly drained drive cracks, sinks or loosens.

So the most important winter protection is built in on day one:

  • a sub-base deep enough for the ground, compacted in layers,
  • a geotextile between clay and stone where the ground is soft,
  • drainage that keeps water moving away from the base and the house,
  • firm edges that stop the surface spreading when the ground moves.

How each surface copes

Resin-bound. A well-laid resin-bound drive on a porous base lets water drain through rather than sit on top, which helps in frost. Problems usually come from laying it over an old surface that doesn't drain, or in cold, damp weather that stops the resin curing. Most resins need dry conditions above a minimum temperature, so we don't lay resin in poor weather.

Block paving. Interlocking blocks flex slightly as the ground moves, and a sunken area can be lifted and relaid. Joints need to stay topped up with sand or grit, because empty joints let water into the bedding.

Gravel. Gravel doesn't crack, and it drains freely. It can be hard to clear snow from, and shovels and ploughs push stones about, so a stabilising grid helps.

Tarmac. Tarmac is hard-wearing in cold weather, but water getting into cracks freezes and widens them. Sealing small cracks early stops them growing.

Gritting salt

Rock salt melts ice but brings grit and salt onto the surface.

  • On resin and block paving, use salt sparingly and sweep up the residue in spring.
  • On coloured surfaces, heavy salting can mark the finish.
  • Sand or grit gives grip without the salt, useful on slopes.

Avoid metal-edged shovels on resin, which can scratch the surface; plastic shovels are kinder.

Slopes and shade

Many Harrogate drives slope, and north-facing or tree-shaded drives stay frozen longer. Moss and algae also grow faster in shade over a wet winter, making the surface slippery. On these drives we may suggest a more textured finish, a different aggregate for resin, or a channel drain to stop water running across the surface and freezing.

Looking after a drive through the year

  • Autumn: clear fallen leaves, which hold moisture and stain light surfaces; check channel drains are clear.
  • Winter: clear snow early, salt lightly and sweep salt and grit away when the weather turns.
  • Spring: brush and rinse the surface, treat moss in shady areas, and re-sand block paving joints if needed.
  • Summer: a good time to seal small cracks in tarmac and rake gravel level.

When to call us

Call us if you see a patch that's sinking, a crack that's getting wider, blocks rocking, or water standing in the same place after rain. These are signs of a problem in the base or the drainage, and they're cheaper to put right early.
